The one on the right is significantly more awesome though 8D

Hah, thanks! Although other than some dirt from the gravel road, his was absolutely spotless and the interior was pristine. But I have no regrets about selling my ‘89; I needed the longbed and it’s been great.

I once had an ‘81 with that same box/tailgate/lettering. Love it. For whatever reason, most of the pictures I’ve seen online have the TOYOTA lettering in Helvetica and most of those have the central chrome latch.

I can’t find a consistent pattern on the tailgate fonts. I’m pretty sure you couldn’t get whatever my font was after the ‘81 facelift (notice also in your second photo that the SR5 badge has moved compared to mine). Central latch also came with the facelift I believe. But apparently they had the helvetica font on *most* 4wd from ‘79 and on.

Hold up, I just found a counterexample:

I think you’re right about most 4WDs having the new font. Anyway, my ‘81 is long gone, but I can always go and check out my Dad’s ‘74 Hilux when I feel nostalgic:

Haha, good to see people taking care of their trucks!

Mine was a 2WD non-SR5, so it looked like this, but without the 4WD decal obviously. Just “TOYOTA” in red on white.

Have mercy! I know he will never sell it, but if he does, and you don’t want it, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

You’re right, he won’t.
I’ve still got a new oil filter for that ‘81 22R, so if you’re ever up in the B.C. Interior, swing through Kamloops and it’s yours ;)
